KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- All aboard! The holidays have officially chugged in to Kansas City thanks to the 17th Annual Kansas City Southern Holiday Express.

The weekend of Dec. 15 at Union Station, children of all ages have the chance to walk, for free, inside a wonderland on the rails and meet the big guy, himself, Santa Claus.

There’s a flatcar with Santa’s sleigh and reindeer, a train on the train, a gingerbread boxcar, the elves’ workshop and a little red caboose. All shining bright.

Back in 2000, Kansas City Southern Employees realized that the Santa Train was the only Christmas some children had as it rolled through little towns.

So, they decided to kick it up a notch.

That’s when the choo-choo became charitable.

This year, Santa and his Elves will have distributed a total of $172,500 in gift cards to the Salvation Army at stops along the route. The gift cards are designated for the purchase of warm clothing and other necessities for kids in need.

The locomotive has covered six states and 22 communities in 26 days on the tracks.

Now, it’s back ho-ho-home in Kansas City, just waiting for you and your family to climb aboard.
