KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A home security camera captured a burglar breaking into a Kansas City home and stealing valuables.

The break-in happened around 10:45 a.m. on Nov. 14 at Daniel Cherian's house. He wasn't home at the time, but when he came back, he realized something wasn't right.

"I only noticed that something was amiss when I came home," Cherian said, "It was just unusual, to say the least, and so I asked my wife, and she was like, 'Maybe you should check the cameras.'"

What they saw was a man approach their locked front door, then head to the back door, which also was locked. The suspect then stood on the railing, climbed onto the balcony and kicked in the door to get inside.

From another camera angle inside the house, the suspect came down the stairs and rummaged through random items, filling a backpack with roughly $20,000 worth of valuables before exiting through the front door.

"He took a lot of jewelry, laptop computers, which he can't even log into and they're all locked down," Cherian said. "So I'm not sure what the value is to him, I don't think he knows any better."

While looking at the video, Cherian recognized the man.

"This guy actually came to our house unsolicited initially offering to rake our leaves and we, you know he offered, reasonable price and seemed like it was a reasonable deal but it turns out he was probably casing our house at that time," Cherian said.

The burglar also took the Cherian's sense of security in their own home.

"It's unsettling in that I feel a little uncomfortable going for a run or leaving the house," Cherian said.

Because there is clear video on the multiple cameras, Cherian said he hopes that will help will identify the burglar and allow those who have seen the video to provide tips to KCPD.

Anyone who recognizes the suspect is asked to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS or fill out a tip form, as there is the possibility for a cash reward.
