Horses swept away by floodwaters in southern Johnson County

Cleanup efforts are still underway in parts of southern Johnson County after massive flooding.

Sherra Schuck said the flooding got so bad, it swept away her two horses.

“We just couldn't prepare for it,” Schuck said.

Schuck’s said that's how she felt when she saw just how high and how fast the water was near 69 Highway and 179th.

“I couldn't even get to the barn, the water was up to my shoulders,” she said. “The river had just taken over the entire barn and pasture.”    

Eventually she was able to wade through and get to the barn, but when she looked, her horses were gone.

“Panic, just sheer panic,” Schuck said. “We started going through the woods and the bushes as far as we could go and you know, looking for them, calling for them and nothing.”

Drone experts with Drone On Demand searched -- trying to see if they could find anything from above.

“Kelly Daniels has helped me in getting in contact with Drone on Demand, who is volunteering their services and their drone to help search the river to help try and find them,” Schuck said. “I'm grateful to both of them. Strangers to me, but they're helping to try and find them and get them home safely, hopefully.”

Her two horses are Lytia and Agapey. Lytia is a white Arabian horse, who has arthritis and is 31 years old. Agapey is 17 years old, and is a brown chestnut quarter horse with a white blaze down her face.

“Good or bad, I just want to know where my girls are at,” she said.
