JOHNSON COUNTY, Kan. — Ahead of the busy summer vacation season, experts want to make sure travelers don't come home with any unwanted souvenirs.
Acendas Travel in Mission, Kansas, said that to keep a vacation relaxing and stress-free, travelers should be aware of any deals that seem to good to be true.
"A deal isn't always a deal, you just want to get the best value," said JoAnne Weeks, vacation sales manager at Acendas Travel.
If vacationers aren't careful, they could come across a pesky problem: bed bugs.
Bed bug infestations can happen anytime of year, but experts want people to pay more attention during peak travel times, such as summer vacation.
"You always want to inspect your room before you accept it," said Cat Heisler, general manager of Pete's Pest Control in Lenexa.
Bed bugs are small and flat, but easy to see.
"Just quickly pulling off the sheets and looking to see if there's bed bugs, and bed bugs are not microscopic, they're definitely large enough to see," Heisler said.
If you find bed bugs, Heisler said it's a good idea to immediately call the professionals.
"You never want to procrastinate if you spot one in your home, because the sooner it's treated, the better off you are, the less expensive the treatment will be," Heisler said.
To avoid any problems while traveling, Heisler suggests inspecting the hotel and putting luggage on the racks, not the floor or bed. Another option is to place suitcases in a garbage bag or the bathtub. This will prevent any bed bugs from finding a home on the bags.
