Allow extra time, expect detours

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Over the next 18 days, around 552,000 passengers are expected to fly through the Kansas City International Airport during the holiday rush.

With the new single terminal under construction, travelers can expect to see plenty of road construction, detours and one-lane routes in and around the terminal.

"The tricky one is right there between terminals B and C," KCI spokesman Joe McBride said. "There's kind of zipper merging going on in a short amount of time. You have people trying to get out of B and get into C, and it's kind of a challenge so allow extra time and be courteous."

From Friday until Jan. 3, KCI will offer free garage parking for the first 30 minutes to help ease traffic congestion.

"If you're wanting to come drop somebody off, pick somebody up, then you can take advantage of parking instead of circling," McBride said.

Economy parking lots are also free up to an hour.

While waiting for someone to arrive, drivers can park in the cell phone waiting lot, located near the FAA air control tower.

When it comes to transporting gifts and luggage, wrapped gifts are allowed. However, the Transportation Security Administration recommends not wrapping them, in case there's a chance they need to be opened.

"One of the things to think about if you're carrying something on or a gift that's already wrapped up, they might be solid, cheese, bread, radio, things like that," McBride said. "On the x-ray, the screener can't really tell what that is. There's a good chance they're going to say, 'We need to unwrap this; we're sorry.'"

Small snow globes are allowed on carry-ons. However, they need to be stored in a plastic bag.

If you have questions on what exactly you can take in your carry-on, you can ask TSA via Twitter or Facebook.
