How to prepare for severe weather season

Spring is usually the start of severe weather season, and the National Weather Service says it is always a good idea to have a plan in place.

This means a plan for no matter where you are, whether it be home, school, work or any other place.

There are also items you should carry on you at all times including a cell phone and a charger.

The National Weather Service recommends having a whistle at home in case your home is damaged and you need a way to call out for help.

Erika Iman knows the basics of protecting her daughter if severe weather hits, but feels she could do more to prepare.

"I feel like it's probably really important to have something prepared, flashlights things like that. We might need water, something for warmth in case the electricity goes out, things like that, so yeah seems very important,” said Iman.

She is not alone. The National Weather Service says most people do not have a plan in place, and there is more to it than just a plan from when you are home.

"Know that severe weather could happen anytime of day, including at night, so everywhere you are during the day school, work, home, any friends or relatives houses, even out shopping have in the back of your mind where you would go if you only had a few minutes to get to shelter,” said meteorologist Dan Hawelitzel with the National Weather Service.

Staying informed before and during severe weather is key and now easier than ever. The National Weather Service recommends downloading weather apps with GPS. Also, pay attention to social media.

"Facebook we typically use leading up to (a storm) and just because of the nature of Twitter where you can get more information out rapidly we tend to use that more during the event,” said Hawelitzel.
