Hundreds gathered at J.C. Nichols Memorial Fountain on Sunday to protest the separation of undocumented immigrant children and their families at the border.
President Donald Trump ended the policy earlier this week, but his administration said on Saturday that 2,000 children were still waiting for reunification.
The "Rally to Protect Families!" was organized by Cosecha KC, a group fighting for immigration reform and protection for the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S.
"Now we know they are reuniting with their parents, but we're still concerned they're in jail. They're not criminals. They haven't done nothing to this country, and we're asking for their release," Raiza Guevara, one of the organizers, said.
Jennifer Sutherlin, who attended the rally with a friend, said she was not politically active until the 2016 election.
"I feel like separating families is not what America stands for. It's not what we should stand for. We are supposed to be the land of the free, and that's not what's happening," she said.
