KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Employees of Hy-Vee’s Lawrence store on Sixth Street learned Thursday morning the grocery store company plans to close the location.

The closure is set for Nov. 3, with more than 200 store employees being offered the opportunity to transfer to other locations and a new online fulfillment center in Kansas City.

“The Sixth Street Hy-Vee has served as a local grocery store for many nearby residents for a number of years, and we understand it will be missed by its customers,” Hy-Vee Western Region Senior Vice President Frank Woodward said in a news release Thursday.

The company said poor sales and a footprint that no longer matched the goals of the store were contributing factors in the closure.

A convenience store next to the Sixth Street location will remain open.

The Hy-Vee on Clinton Parkway is not affected by the closure.

“Hy-Vee remains committed to the Lawrence community,” Woodward said in the release. “We also will continue to invest in our Clinton Parkway Hy-Vee store in Lawrence.”
