UPDATE: JULY 4, 6:30 A.M.: The Kansas Highway Patrol has identified the victim as Lashonda Denice Ikerd, 34, of KCK.
A woman was struck by a vehicle and killed Friday morning while walking on the interstate, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
The crash, which happened around 3:30 a.m., shut down northbound Interstate 635 past State Avenue in Kansas.
Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Candice Breshears said investigators are not sure why the woman was walking on the interstate.
The woman's name has not been released.
Kansas City, Kansas, police, who also responded to the crash, said the driver remained at the scene.
I-635 northbound was closed past State Avenue for several hours but reopened later Friday morning.
The crash is under investigation by the KCK Police Department's Traffic Support Unit and Critical Collision Response Team.
