1 driver injured in Friday morning crash, fire on Interstate 70 at Sterling Avenue

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — UPDATE, 11:35 a.m. | The Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department released additional details on Friday morning's crash on Interstate 70.

A white Volvo tractor-trailer was westbound on I-70 when the Volvo was slowing or stopped due to traffic congestion, according to KCPD's preliminary investigation.

The truck was rear ended by a second white Volvo tractor-trailer.

After the impact, the striking semi caught on fire.

The driver of the first Volvo was transported with critical injuries. He is currently in stable condition, per KCPD.

The driver and passenger of the striking Volvo were not injured.

An investigation is ongoing.

UPDATE, 10:50 a.m. | The Independence Police Department has opened westbound Interstate 70 at Sterling Avenue.

EARLIER REPORT | The westbound lanes of Interstate 70 at Sterling Avenue were closed Friday morning following a crash involving multiple tractor-trailers.

The Independence Police Department said two semis crashed near Sterling Avenue shortly before 7:45 a.m.

One of the semis caught fire.

No injuries have been reported.

A small amount of traffic is now getting by on the shoulder, but motorists should avoid the area.
