KANSAS CITY, Mo. — With the metro area once again dealing with cold temperatures on Tuesday, ice became more of a concern on roads and sidewalks.

Temperatures stayed in the low 30s throughout the day leading to dangerous conditions in some neighborhoods.

At Campbell Street between Holmes Street and Troost Avenue, neighbors resorted to putting out safety cones as cars skidded down parts of the road.

“It’s very dangerous especially because it’s all hills around here,” said resident Terrence Fitch. “If you don’t know how to maneuver your wheel, you will end up in a ditch or in somebody’s yard. If you’re driving too fast, you might end up in someone’s house.”

41 Action News witnessed multiple cars having problems while driving on the road.

With many families living in the neighborhood, Fitch said he was concerned about other people walking around the area.

“My main concern is the children and the elderly,” he said. “That hill is treacherous.”

In other parts of the metro, crews worked to clean up parking lots and sidewalks ahead of a possible refreeze.

At Brookside, Nick Cello and his team cleared ice and slush from areas where holiday shoppers often walk.

“We’re mostly just out here throwing down ice melt and catching all the things that are going to be refreezing,” he said. “All the alleyways where people are walking are refreezing now so we’re going to have to do that again so people don’t fall.”

With Christmas just one week away, Cello said it was important to have safe conditions for people to get around.

“It’s pretty urgent,” he said. “We wanted to make sure we got it done properly.”

As the metro got set for more cold and possible ice later this week, Terrence Fitch hoped things wouldn’t get any worse.

“Certain spots are slushy but certain spots are packed down,” he said. “If they just send a truck and do one pass, it won’t pack up."
