INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Ninety minutes before class was scheduled to begin, fifth-grade students from J. W. Luff Elementary School in Independence showed up at a Hy-Vee store to serve breakfast to veterans.

The grocery store chain provides a free meal on Veterans Day. The students provided the service, entertainment and fellowship.

“The veterans are all just so kind,” student Lexie Panuco said. “I think it helps when we're kind to them and they know we care about them.”

Between waiting on the veterans, the students sang songs and shook hands.

“They are the reason why we're standing here right now. We want to recognize them because they were in the Army, they could've died," student Keegan Ross said. "They sacrificed their life for us."

Their good deed didn’t go unappreciated.

“These kids are fabulous, this was a lot of fun,” said Ed Clary, an U.S. Army veteran.
