Independence man sentenced to 17 years without parole for illegal possession of a firearm

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An Independence man has been sentenced to 17 years in prison without parole for "illegally possessing a firearm that he used to shoot his girlfriend," according to a news release..

William C. McGee, 45, was sentenced on Friday and was found guilty in April 2019 of being a felon in a possession of a firearm.

In June 2018, police responded to the Great Western Motel in Independence to investigate the sound of gunshots.

McGee later ws located near a vehicle that matched the description the caller gave to police and was arrested. He also had an “active arrest warrant for domestic assault.”

“When he saw the police officers, McGee reached behind his back, pulled out a black Hi-Point 9mm handgun, and threw it over the vehicle,” the release stated.

McGee’s girlfriend, who was with him at the time, told officers that McGee had shot her and that she had a “gunshot wound to her buttocks,” according to the release.

He was sentenced as an armed career criminal because of prior felony convictions, the release stated. He had been convicted for delivery, distribution and possession of a controlled substance and carrying a concealed weapon.
