KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Independence police are investigating a crash involving a passenger vehicle and a train Tuesday afternoon.

Police were called to the scene around 2:20 p.m. at the train tracks between East Winner Road and East 15th Street.

Amtrak said its Missouri River Runner, which travels from St. Louis to Kansas City, had just left the Independence station for Kansas City when the collision occurred.

Two people were taken to local hospitals for treatment, police said.

No one on the train was injured.

Authorities closed South Harvard Avenue and South Sterling Avenue between Winner and 15th for the investigation.

The roads in the area reopened after about two hours.
