Independence police officer shoots prowler Sunday morning at apartment complex

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A confrontation with three prowlers at an Independence apartment complex ended with an Independence police officer shooting one of the suspects.

The incident happened about 8:45 a.m. Sunday at the Pepperwood Apartments on East 37th Terrace.

Officers confronted the three prowlers, two men and a woman.

One of the male suspects was shot, according to an Independence Police Department news release.

There was also w a crash between police cars and the suspect's pick up truck at the apartment complex, the release states.

The scene unfolded in front of many Pepperwood Apartment residents.

"I heard shot and I'm like that's in my parking lot so I come out the balcony and I just see the car speeding out and I see the police car just smashed up and it's just crazy, it's like something you aint never seen before," Ontario Smith said.

"I've been here six years and it's been a quiet neighborhood and I'm thinking man maybe it's time I better move," resident Dennis O'Brien added.

The prowler shot by the officer drove off from the wreck and made it to Interstate 70 and Lee's Summit Road.

The suspect suffered a non life-threatening gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital.

Two other suspects ran away at the end of the chase and are still being sought, according to the release.

No descriptions of those suspects were given.

Independence Police are looking to speak to two people about their involvement in the shooting. They released photos of the man and woman.

The man may go by "PT" and the woman may go by "Jessica," according to police.

No officers were injured.

Two guns were found, one at the apartment complex and the other at the end of the car chase.
