KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 19-year-old Independence man was sentenced Wednesday to 20 years in prison for his role in the murder of 17-year-old Matthew Haylock.

Tyler Gates was 18 when he shot Haylock at a parking lot outside Independence Center on Jan. 2, 2018.

A jury found Gates guilty of second-degree murder and armed criminal action in June 2019.

A Jackson County judge on Wednesday sentenced Gates to 20 years for the murder conviction and seven years for the armed criminal action conviction. The sentences were set to run concurrently.
