KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- UPDATE 5 PM 3/5/2018: A man injured in a wreck involving a KCATA on March 2 has died.
Dennis E. Schoellhorn, 56, of Independence, Mo. has died, according to Kansas City police. Schoellhorn was the driver of the Ford Fusion that collided with the bus.
PREVIOUS COVERAGE 3/2/2018:
On Friday morning, 14 people were taken to hospitals after a KCATA bus and a car collided near E. 25th Street and Charlotte.
A red Ford Fusion was driving south on Charlotte, and the bus was driving west on 25th. The two t-boned in the intersection.
Police told 41 Action News that three people inside of the car involved in the wreck were transported to an area hospital. The male passenger in the car is listed in critical condition. A woman and infant were also in the car, but officials say their injuries, if any, were not serious.
A total of 11 people on board the ATA bus were transported to area hospitals as a precaution.
The city started phasing out the traffic lights at the intersection last October, because according to federal criteria, they're not needed.
The traffic lights are no longer in service, and are bagged, awaiting removal in a couple weeks.
Public Works put up two stop signs for southbound traffic on Charlotte, with traffic on 25th having the right-of-way. "Cross traffic does not stop" is clearly marked on the stop signs.
People familiar with the area say although the changes have been in place for months, there are still near-accidents in the intersection all the time.
Police are investigating what caused the crash.
But on the stop sign posted north & south bound it says cross traffic doesn't stop. @41actionnews
