A Johnson County inmate was found dead in his jail cell Sunday morning.
Gary McCormick, 59, was found unresponsive at 4:51 a.m. while detention staff was conducting a routine welfare check of inmates.
Life-saving efforts were initiated by detention staff and in-house medial personnel. Olathe Fire Department and JoCo Med-Act also responded, but life-saving efforts were unsuccessful.
McCormick was housed alone and had been incarcerated since July 2015 awaiting charges of rape, aggravated criminal sodomy, attempted first degree murder, aggravated battery, and felony fleeing and eluding. He had a bond of $1 million.
He was scheduled for a preliminary hearing May 18 at 11 a.m.
Johnson County officials say the investigation continues, but his death is not suspicious.
