An inmate on death row has been pronounced dead by facility medical staff, the Kansas Department of Corrections said.
Douglas Belt, 54, died at the El Dorado Correctional Facility on Wednesday evening.
He was convicted of killing Lucille Gallegos, 43, who was was found decapitated at a Wichita apartment in 2002. After his conviction for Gallegos's murder, Belt's DNA was eventually tied to several rapes in the the 1980s and 1990s, KSN TV reports.
Belt was sentenced to death in Sedgwick County after a 2004 conviction for capital murder and intentional and premeditated killing in the commission of, or subsequent to rape.
Belt's death leaves nine people remaining on Kansas' death row.
