KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Jackson County, Kansas, man has died following a crash Friday night.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office received a call just after 10 p.m. Friday regarding a pickup truck hanging off of the roadway and “teetering next to a culvert” at V Road and K 116 Highway, roughly 4 miles east of Holton, according to a news release.

Police said that a resident tried to pull the vehicle back on the roadway “when the truck rolled over and into the deep ditch and into the water,” trapping the driver’s head under water.

Jackson County EMS, the Holton Fire Department and a Jackson County deputy responded to the scene and after removing him from the vehicle, began administering CPR, according to the release. The man, identified as Larry D. Hladky, 59, of Holton, was transported to a Holton hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A female passenger was “freed from the vehicle” before first responders arrived on scene, according to the release.

The crash still is under investigation.
