KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Jackson County Sheriff's Deputy was involved in a shooting northeast of Independence late Monday night.

Sheriff Darryl Forte said a deputy initiated a vehicle stop around 11 p.m. near North Perrin Road and Blue Mills Road in a rural area in northeast Jackson County near Fort Osage Township.

Shots were exchanged between the deputy and female suspect.

The deputy was not injured, the female is in an area hospital in unknown condition. She was reportedly walking and talking when she left the scene.

The cause of her injury was later confirmed to be a gunshot wound.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the shooting.
