KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The National Weather Service has extended the timing and area of a winter storm warning to include the Kansas City metro area.

NWS added Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas and Cass, Clay, Jackson and Platte counties in Missouri to the warning.

The warning is now in effect from midnight through 8 p.m. Friday.

More counties in Kansas were also added to the warning, including Leavenworth, Linn and Miami.

In Missouri, residents in Adair, Bates, Caldwell, Clinton, Linn, Livingston and Ray counties should also take precautions.

The weather service said heavy mixed precipitation is expected in these areas, with snow and ice accumulating.

41 Action News chief meteorologist Gary Lezak says the Kansas City metro area will likely see between 2 and 5 inches of snow.

Ice accumulations are possible where freezing rain occurs, according to Lezak, which is more likely to the south and east of Kansas City.

Power outages and tree damage are likely, and travel could be “nearly impossible,” NWS said.

The warning was already in effect for areas east of Kansas City. The metro area was upgraded from a watch.
