KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City, Missouri, man is accused of beating a woman unconscious after an argument over missing items from his apartment, according to Jackson County prosecutors.
On Tuesday, police responded to a disturbance in the 5400 block of Blue Ridge Cutoff. Officers found a woman facedown in a hallway in front of an apartment, according to court documents.
Steven Allen, 63, was found inside the apartment and taken into custody.
An unarmed security guard and the night manager of the complex told police that they went to the apartment together after someone in the building reported a noise. When they knocked on the door of the apartment, Allen answered and told them everything was fine, according to court documents.
When they asked to speak with the woman, Allen allegedly tried to shut the door, which was when they saw the woman lying on the floor, unresponsive.
The manager and the security guard called police, who found the victim with a bruised and swollen eye, bruises to her elbows and back, and cuts and bruises to both knees. She was transported to an area hospital, where she was diagnosed with several brain bleeds and remained in a coma as of Wednesday, according to court documents.
Allen told police that they had argued because he noticed items missing from his apartment. He said they yelled at each for about an hour, but the argument never became physical. He said the woman passed out because she was intoxicated and rolled onto the floor, according to court documents.
He was charged with one count of first-degree assault. Prosecutors requested a $100,000 bond.
