KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Authorities are looking for a Kansas City man after DNA evidence connected him to a fatal shooting outside a gas station in downtown Kansas City last week.
Timothy R. Fernandez, 41, faces charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action, Jackson County prosecutors said. On Friday afternoon, he was not in custody.
Kansas City police responded to a shooting Feb. 5 at 17th Street and Grand Avenue. Michael Bryan, 40, was found shot to death on a sidewalk in front of the gas station.
Surveillance video showed Fernandez, Bryan and a third man talking outside the gas station before the shooting. The third man walked into the dumpster area while Fernandez and Bryan continued to talk. A couple of minutes later, Bryan turned from Fernandez and began to walk away, and Fernandez pulled out a gun and shot him in the back, according to court records.
After the shooting, Fernandez walked away through the parking lot, and the third man came back from the dumpsters, looked toward Bryan and also walked away through the parking lot, court records said.
The surveillance footage also showed Fernandez blowing his nose into a tissue about 20 minutes before the shooting. Police recovered the tissue and tested it for DNA, court records said.
Two days after the shooting, police found a backpack and a leather jacket nearby and also tested those items for DNA and fingerprints.
Both the DNA and fingerprints were linked to Fernandez, according to court records.
Anyone with information on Fernandez’s whereabouts or the shooting is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
