KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City could be the center of the NFL universe by 2020.

The league informed the Kansas City Chiefs Thursday afternoon that the city is one of five finalists to host either the 2019 or 2020 NFL Drafts.

Kansas City will compete with bids from Cleveland/Canton, Tennessee, Denver, and Las Vegas.

The league is expected to make a final selection on a host city at the NFL meetings in May.

Kathy Nelson, President and CEO of the Kansas City Sports Commission, said her team learned of the NFL’s announcement just before 2 p.m. Thursday when the phone rang from the Kansas City Chiefs.

Nelson said there will likely be an opportunity for the city to put together more details for the city’s bid, including venue and hotel information.

Nelson said the city would feel comfortable hosting either the 2019 or 2020 bids.
