If you’re cold, chances are your pet is too. That's why Spay and Neuter Kansas City spent Tuesday loading up their trucks with crates, dog houses and hay.
On Wednesday they will hit the road in search of pets that people have left outside in the ice and snow. The supplies will serve as a lifeline for outdoor dogs and cats who have little to no shelter from the elements.
“They can get frostbite, they can get hypothermia,” explained Marlan Roberts with Spay and Neuter KC. “The temperatures can get low. Their bodies can shut down. The wind is going to be blistering cold. It's going to be snowing. The right thing to do is to bring the dog inside.”
If you can't do that, Spay and Neuter KC says it's vital to provide some kind of outdoor protection for your cat or dog.
If you can’t afford outdoor supplies, contact Spay and Neuter KC. The organization can give or lend supplies to pet owners.
Another tip from Roberts - be sure to check your outdoor pets' water supply frequently to make sure it hasn't completely frozen. While it is cold, animals can still become dehydrated.
If you have a crate or dog house to donate, you can contact Spay and Neuter KC. They only have four left, and the list for those in need of one is growing.
