KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Two people are in custody following a police pursuit in which a suspect shot at law enforcement and officers returned fire.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said that around 2:30 a.m. a Salina officer observed a 2006 silver Lincoln Town Car that failed to stop at multiple signs.
The officer tried to initiate a traffic stop,but the vehicle did not stop and a chase began.
An occupant of the town car fired several shots at the officer's vehicle, and the officer was shot in the foot.
Other officers attempted to deploy stop sticks near Halstead Road and Interstate 70, but an occupant of the car again fired, and officers returned fire, and the chase continued.
A short time later, the driver lost control near West Crawford Street and Halstead Road, and crashed into a ditch. The individuals in the vehicle left the scene on foot.
A 37-year-old Wichita man was caught in a nearby field and taken into custody.
Police later located a 36-year-old man near the I-70 East Topeka Turnpike Interchange.
The injured officer was transported to an area hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery.
The investigation continues.
