KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 25-year-old woman from Lenexa was gunned down early Sunday morning in Waterloo, Iowa.

Police say that around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Micalla Rettinger was driving a car along an Iowa highway when a bullet entered the car, striking Rettinger.

Rettinger later died from her injuries. A second passenger in the car, 32-year-old Adam Kimball, was also struck but survived. A third passenger was not injured.

Police said they have no evidence the car or any of the passengers were targeted in the shooting. They are asking for the public’s help to gather information, especially pertaining to any hunting that may have been taking place at the time of the shooting.

Rettinger was a four-year softball player at the University of Northern Iowa in Waterloo, earning second-team all-Missouri Valley Conference honors her junior and senior years.
