LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. — As salt trucks treated highways around Kansas City early Thursday morning, another team worked from inside to make sure the driving public has a safe commute.
Traffic operators and customer service representatives monitor phone calls, cameras and other tools from the Kansas City Scout center based at the Missouri Department of Transportation's Kansas City district office.
On days when teams expect snow, like Thursday, Scout brings in extra help to operate its "snow desk." This group communicates with MoDOT drivers on the highways to update the state's road conditions map in real time, allowing drivers to get an idea of what to expect before they hit the roads.
Kansas City Scout oversees roughly 300 miles of highway around Kansas City in both Missouri and Kansas.
Salt trucks started pre-treating roads around the metro at about 3 o'clock Thursday morning. By 6 a.m., there were no reports of weather-related traffic incidents.
