KCK chemical company expected to pay $1 million fine after 2016 toxic-cloud incident

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A KCK chemcial company reached a plea agreement Friday in a 2016 chemical spill in Atchison, Kansas.

Harcros Chemicals pleaded guilty Friday in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kansas, to violating a federal clean air act, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office in Kansas.

A mistaken combination of powerful chemicals were accidentally released on Oct. 21, 2016, when 4,000 gallons of sulfuric acid were combined with 5,800 gallons of sodium hypochlorite.

The incident happened at MGP Ingredients.

More than 100 people were examined for problems related to the leak.

Sentencing for Harcros is scheduled for May 27.
