KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One man has been charged in connection with a car chase that spanned from Independence to Fairway on Sunday morning with a 1-year-old in the vehicle.
Rozelle Jones, 35, of Kansas City, Kansas, faces felony charges of resisting arrest, detention and stop by fleeing. Jones also is charged with misdemeanors of driving while intoxicated with a person under 17 years old in the vehicle and endangering the welfare of a child.
According to a probably cause statement, Jones ran a red light at Noland Road and Lynn Street and struck a vehicle at 39th Street and Noland Road in Independence.
He then drove over stop sticks placed by police when he entered westbound Interstate 70 from Noland Road. Jones continued west on I-70, exceeding 100 miles per hour, according to the probable cause statement, and ran off the road, hitting a rock wall near Blue Ridge Cutoff.
The vehicle pursuit ended in Fairway, at which time Jones crashed into a yard and attempted to flee on foot, according to the statement.
A 1-year-old was found unresponsive in a car seat in the vehicle, but paramedics released the child to his mother after the child was examined and became responsive.
Officers also found a .40-caliber handgun in Jones’ pocket and an AK-47 pistol and two bags of marijuana in the vehicle. His blood-alcohol level was twice the legal limit when he was tested at the Fairway police station, according to the statement.
His bond is set at $50,000 under the condition that he not drive or possess weapons. He also will not be allowed to have unsupervised contact with anyone under 18 years old.
