KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Two Kansas City, Kansas, police officers were involved in a shooting in the 600 block of South 71st Terrace on Monday morning.

The officers responded to a public parking lot for an area check around 7:40 a.m. and located a stolen vehicle out of Leavenworth, according to a statement Monday afternoon from the KCK Police Department.

While investigating the stolen vehicle, a tenant from a nearby apartment complex approached and reported a possible armed disturbance.

Police then observed a subject matching the description from the armed disturbance enter the stolen vehicle.

After spotting the KCK police officers, he attempted to flee the scene in the vehicle.

One officer deployed a Taser, but it didn't work. The suspect then allegedly drove the vehicle at one of the officers, prompting both officers to open fire on the driver.

The suspect subsequently exited the vehicle and fled on foot into a nearby apartment building. The officers gave pursuit and shot him with a Taser after locating him, at which time the man was taken into custody.

Emergency responders arrived to provide first aid and transport the man to a local hospital.

Both KCK officers reported minor injuries and were released from the scene. They have been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation in accordance with KCKPD protocol, according to a statement from the department.

The police department's Twitter announced the shooting around 9:40 a.m.

Topeka police are assisting the KCKPD Criminal Investigations Bureau with the investigation.
