UPDATE, 6:30 p.m. | The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives ruled the cause of the fire accidental "and electrical in nature," according to a news release.

EARLIER | Kansas City, Kansas, fire crews battled a blaze at the federal courthouse Tuesday night.

KCKFD responded around 8:44 p.m. to the Robert J. Dole Federal Courthouse, 500 State Ave., where a fire was reported on the second and third floors of the building.

After an investigation conducted by The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, there was no evidence of arson.

The ATF will continue investigating along with the United States Marshals Service for the District of Kansas, the FBI, the Kansas State Fire Marshals Office and the Kansas City, KS Police Department.

No injuries were reported, and the extent of damage to the building was not immediately known.

John Droppelmann, KCKFD deputy chief and fire marshal, said a police officer driving by the building saw smoke and notified the fire department.

Firefighters entered the building and found the blaze in a crawl space between the second and third floors.

It took about two hours to bring the fire under control, Droppelmann said.

Frank Kelsey, assistant special agent in charge with the ATF, said investigators could be on the scene for a couple of days.

Kelsey said it was too early to determine the cause of the fire or whether it was suspicious.
