Person in custody after standoff in northeast KCMO

UPDATE | Police tell 41 Action News the standoff is over. Everyone is out of the residence and they are safe. 

The subject of interest is in custody.

EARLIER | KANSAS CITY, Mo. — KCPD is on the scene of a standoff near Bellefontaine and Smart Avenue in northeast Kansas City, Missouri.

Police were initially called just before 5 a.m. about an armed disturbance.

When they got to the scene, they were told the armed person had run inside a residence.

Police spokeswoman Kari Thompson told 41 Action News that family inside the residence told police another family member assaulted and threatened them with a weapon.

Some family members are still inside with the subject of interest, and it is possible they are children.

Thompson said the subject of interest is communicating with police negotiators as they try to resolve the situation safely and peacefully.
