A man was transported to the hospital and later died after an armed disturbance on Friday morning.

Officials said an armed man was in the street at 44th and Chestnut in KCMO, east of Prospect Avenue.

The man was later identified as 31-year-old Rodney E. Jacobs.

Police received a call around 8:45 a.m. from a woman who said her ex had fired a shot at her from the street.

Officers said they were able to narrow down the location due to Shot Spotter.

When officers arrived, police attempted to negotiate with Jacobs for at least 20 minutes.

"During this negotiation there were calming voices. We were trying to calm the suspect down. We let them know there is assistance, other help if he would just put the gun down and resolve it peacefully. But unfortunately that isn't what happened here today," said Stacey Graves, KCPD spokesperson.

Police said the suspect pointed a gun at them. That's when they opened fire, striking the man, officials told 41 Action News.

Jacobs was transported to the hospital where he later died.
