Kearney Mayor Bill Dane, 68, died early Monday morning.

Dane was admitted to St. Luke's Hospital on the Plaza on Wednesday following longstanding health issues.

He has consecutively been the mayor of Kearney since 2001.

City Administrator Jim Eldridge says most recently Dane was behind the passage of the funding via sales taxes for the construction of a second Interstate 35 interchange. The measure passed overwhelmingly on Tuesday, April 3.

The president of the Board of Aldermen, Dan Holt will serve as the acting mayor until an interim is selected.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been finalized.
