41 Action News anchor Cynthia Newsome and photojournalist Matt Reeb received the June L. Biedler Award for Outstanding Television Journalism on Monday during the American Association for Cancer Research virtual annual conference. Below is a message from Cynthia:

I am humbled and honored to receive this national award from the American Association for Cancer Research and thrilled that my colleague, photojournalist Matt Reeb, is sharing the award with me, representing the other photojournalists and editors at 41 Action News who also contributed to the project. Television is not a solo act and I recognize, appreciate and thank my awesome team.

Newsome's House Calls is a series of reports that I began in 2011 when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. After surviving for seven years, I was diagnosed in February 2019 with metastatic breast cancer. The new diagnosis sent me on a journey to talk with other women battling metastatic breast cancer, and I relaunched Newsome's House Calls for that purpose.

My goal was for personal discovery and empowering other women battling metastatic breast cancer. I believe when we share our stories publicly, we build strength and unity in our common bond. Receiving the June L. Biedler Award for Cancer Journalism in television news affirms my hope that my stories on metastatic breast cancer are making a difference.

I am smiling and feeling great because of the awards and because I'm doing well. I'm still in treatment and I had a new MRI last week. I should get the results later this week. I'm encouraged that things are going well. I'm still able to work and, aside from a few side effects, I am living life to the fullest. I encourage everyone else to do the same. Every day is a gift from God; be grateful and treasure your family, friends, work friends, faith community, neighbors, pets and your health.

Thank you for your prayers for me and my family. All is well!
