Last known Pearl Harbor survivor in KC metro passes away

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The last known Pearl Harbor survivor in the Kansas City area has passed away.

Dorwin F. Lamkin died Sunday in Overland Park, Kansas. He was 96 years-old.

Lamkin joined the Navy in 1940 on his 18th birthday.

One year later, on December 7, 1941, he was serving on the USS Nevada at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked.

After the attack, Dorwin served on the USS San Francisco in the Pacific.

For his time in the Navy, Lamkin was awarded the Navy Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victim Medal and Presidential Unit Citation ribbon.

Services for Lamkin will be held at the Amos Family Funeral Home on Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 pm. in Shawnee.
