OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- After being shot multiple times one week ago, a dog has beaten the odds.
Saturday, Lagertha, a pit bull, walked out of the Blue Pearl Emergency Pet Hospital in Johnson County and got in a car, to start her new life of recovery with a foster family.
Now that family wants justice for what was done to her.
Foster father Shane Rudman said he will legally go after whoever is responsible for shooting the animal in the right side of her face, maliciously and intentionally.
His group, the Animal Justice League of America, has provided tips to the Buchanan County Sheriff's Office and other law enforcement.
"If you don't get the job done, we will bring in our law team and private investigators and get the job done," said Rudman.
The Jungle Law Firm feels just as strongly as Rudman.
One of its attorneys, Lauren Sierra Kruskall, said if the person responsible has done it more than once, they will go after a harsher sentence.
The other partner, Tristen Woods, said they will go after the felony charge of aggravated animal abuse.
"Because it was inhumane torture on a dog," said Woods.
The Jungle Law Firm would like to see Missouri law incorporate an online animal cruelty registry.
MO House Bill 1418 would have made for stricter sentences. It was read twice but has never made it to a committee.
Rudman said from the information provided, the sheriff believes there is a prosecutable case.
