KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Lee's Summit man is accused of driving drunk and causing more than $750 in damage after he crashed his vehicle into the police department headquarters Monday morning.

Estakio J. Alfons, 43, faces charges of first-degree property damage, a felony, and driving while intoxicated.

Lee's Summit police said officers were dispatched to the front lobby early Monday to find that a car had crashed into the windows there.

According to court records, Alfons drove his Jeep Patriot into the parking lot of the police department on Tudor Road, stopping in front of the building before he accelerated and drove between two rock barriers. He struck the building, causing broken glass and structural damage. He then reversed and accelerated the Jeep forward, again striking the building, records said.

Officers who confronted Alfons detected alcohol on his breath. A sample was taken, and he was found to have a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.179 percent.

Alfons told police that he was on his way home from an "after work party" and fell asleep in the parking lot, waking up when he crashed into the building, records said.

The front entrance of the police department and courts were closed after the incident to determine if the structure was safe. They reopened shortly before 10 a.m.

LSPD said all other police services were running as normal.
