KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 71-year-old Lenexa man faces a murder charge in the death of a 14-year-old girl who was struck by a vehicle last April in Overland Park and later died.

Sudhir S. Gandhi was charged in Johnson County with reckless second-degree murder, District Attorney Steve Howe said in a news release on Wednesday. His bond was set at $50,000.

Overland Park police officers responded around 3:15 p.m. on April 12, 2019, to Switzer Road and West 123rd Street after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle while walking on the sidewalk east side of Switzer Road.

Alex Rumple, an Oxford Middle School student, was transported to an area hospital, where she later died of her injuries.

Gandhi’s first court appearance is set for 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

Police at the time said his vehicle left the road near 127th Street and Switzer and finally came to a stop after crashing into a wooden fence near 123rd Street and Switzer.
