A local chocolate shop is raising money to help senior citizens in Kansas City stay cool this summer.

Garza’s Goodies Chocolates and Confections is donating 10 percent of every ice cream treat to the Bishop Sullivan Center’s Project ElderCool program. It provides window unit air conditioners to low-income elderly residents around the metro area.

Richard Garza said he and his wife opened their business to teach their son that in life, you can’t always take from others. Garza said you need to find ways to provide for yourself and, in turn, give to others.

Raising money for Project ElderCool is the way Garza and his family is giving back to the community.

“We wanted to reach out to a program that specifically helps people that we encounter,” he said. “That it will be very well impacting here, locally.”

In addition to donating a part of proceeds to Project ElderCool, Garza is also collecting monetary donations. Since June, they’ve raised enough money to donate two air conditioning units to the Bishop Sullivan Center. They are almost at enough money for a third unit.

The goal is to donate 10 units before the end of September. To learn more about Project ElderCool, visit the Bishop Sullivan Center website.

Garza’s Goodies Chocolates and Confections is located on the northeast corner of 85th Street and Wornall Road. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
