KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City-based crews are being dispatched to Louisiana to assist residents in the wake of Hurricane Laura.

The Platte-Clay Electric Cooperative said it sent a crew of four lineworkers to southwestern Louisiana to help a local company restore power.

Beauregard Electric Cooperative was faced with more than 40,000 outages once Laura made landfall, according to a release from Platte-Clay.

The Platte-Clay linemen join 100 others from the Association of Missouri Electric Cooperatives being sent to help.

The last time Platte-Clay sent crews south was in 2018 when Hurricane Michael hit Florida. Platte-Clay, in turn, has received assistance in the past for outages from tornadoes and ice storms.

“Our fellow electric cooperatives in the path of Hurricane Laura have faced tremendous devastation with thousands of households expected to be without power for weeks,” said Dave Deihl, Platte-Clay Electric Cooperative CEO. “We’re proud of our employees who are making the sacrifice of missing time with their friends and families to lend a hand to those in need.”

The co-op said workers are taking extra safety precautions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which includes a tent city constructed for better social distancing and special air filters in HVAC equipment.
