KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Many small businesses in the Kansas City area are hoping for a big start to Small Business Saturday.

Shopping districts throughout the metro participate in the annual event, which is designed to help drive shoppers to local stores and restaurants and away from Amazon and big box stores.

Many small businesses have extended hours and "doorbuster" deals to encourage residents to shop local and keep more money in the local economy.

The Brookside Shopping District and Waldo Area Business Association are among those participating, along with shopping centers in Parkville, Liberty, Lee's Summit and other cities across the metro.
