Man in critical condition after overnight assault in KCK

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A man is in critical but stable condition in the hospital, after Kansas City, Kansas police believe he was shot in the head.

Officers responded to the 4700 block of State Avenue on a disturbance around 2 a.m. Saturday. When they arrived, they found a man on the ground with a significant head injury. He was transported to the hospital where he is being treated for blunt force trauma to the head.

While there, police saw two people run from the crime scene and jump into a vehicle. One of the officers followed the vehicle on foot down N. 47th Terrace, a dead-end street. While the officer waited for back-up, the car turned around and accelerated towards the officer. According to police, the officer feared for his life and fired his weapon at the driver.

KCK police then initiated a pursuit until the suspect vehicle crashed into a truck in the area of 62nd and State Avenue. A passenger in the vehicle was taken into custody. The driver took off on foot. Police believe they now have that driver in custody.

There were no injuries to the driver or the passenger after the initial encounter.

No one involved in the crash was hurt.
