JACKSON COUNTY, Mo. — A man suffered extensive burns in a house fire in Prairie Township Saturday morning.

Fire crews from Prairie Township, Lake Lotawana, Lone Jack, Central Jackson County, Lee's Summit, Pleasant Hill and Sni Valley responded to 9810 7 Highway just before 9:00 Saturday morning.

Fire Chief Bill Large says the two-story brick and mortar wood frame home was at least 70% involved with smoke and fire on arrival.

Large says six adults were upstairs in the home when they heard a noise. They came downstairs and discovered a man on the couch on fire, and his home oxygen on fire.

They tried to put the fire out, and get out of the home.

The man suffering extensive burns was outside the home when fire crews arrived.

He was transported to an area hospital in critical/grave condition.

Crews had to shut down 7 Highway to run hoses to get water to the scene.

Firefighters could only fight the blaze from the outside, due to the heavy flames and delay getting water.

Chief Large says the home, valued at an estimated half-million dollars or more is a total loss.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it's not believed to be suspicious at this time.

The State Fire Marshal has been called in to conduct an investigation.
