Meals on Wheels of Lee's Summit plans ahead for cancelled deliveries

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Meals on Wheels of Lee’s Summit canceled deliveries Monday due to the winter storm, but those meals are vital to the people they serve.

Susie Newsam, board chair for Meals on Wheels of Lee’s Summit, said it is "very unfortunate" when such weather events occur.

"Last winter, we had 10 non-delivery days," Newsam said, "and so it was really, really a pretty major winter, so we’re hoping we don’t have that again this year.”

However, Meals on Wheels does plan ahead for these days. Earlier in December, they delivered emergency meal packets, which ensure clients have a meal, even when delivery drivers can’t make the trip.

When Lee’s Summit R-7 School district cancels school, Meals on Wheels cancels deliveries.

Those who wish to help can donate non-perishable food items for the emergency meal kits by calling Meals on Wheels at (816) 743-4400 for more information or visit their website.
