Metro family describes details of Sunday home invasion

Posted

Police continue to investigate a home invasion that happened early Sunday morning on NE 99th Street.

Eddie Herman, who lives in the home with his three children, said whoever is responsible stole his son's PlayStation 4 from inside the son's room as he slept.

"You're feeling violated," he explained. "You're feeling vulnerable. You're upset."

Herman showed 41 Action News around his home on Monday, taking the path most likely taken by the suspect.

"The door has smudges from where police took all the prints," said Herman, showing the rear sliding door he believes the suspect used to get inside. "They opened both doors to the refrigerator and they were left open."

Herman said the suspect likely walked from the kitchen to his son's upstairs bedroom, where he took the teenager's PlayStation 4 and wallet.

"They were in my room while I was sleeping," said 17-year-old Isaac Herman. "I'm imagining what if I woke up and they are in front of me taking my things? I don't know if they were armed or not. I could have been really hurt."

After taking the items from Isaac Herman's room, the family believes the suspect then went to the garage.

Eddie Herman said the suspect found a gas can in the garage, which he then poured out into a family vehicle.

"I knew the vehicle had been touched. The door to the garage was open," Eddie Herman said. "Both my front seats are soaked with gasoline. There's an unbearable smell in there."

Because of the specific items that were stolen, and how other valuable items were left untouched, Eddie Herman believes the family was specifically targeted.

"Whoever did this knew us," he explained. "They had special reason for being in the house by the fact that none of my valuables are missing."

With the suspect still on the loose, the crime continues to worry the family.

"It's more than scary," Eddie Herman said. "It tells you it was brazen. Whoever did this knew where they were going and what they were doing. They were willing to take the risk that we might wake up."

Moving forward, Eddie Herman said the family will take precautions to make sure a similar crime doesn't happen again.

"From now on, every time we leave the house, we have to go through lock down mode," he explained. "We're also looking into buying a firearm. That's something I've been contemplating for some time."

As of Monday evening, police had not released a description of a suspect.
