ST. LOUIS (AP) — A Missouri lawmaker says she posted and deleted a comment on Facebook saying she hoped for President Donald Trump's assassination.

Democratic Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal says she didn't mean what she posted Thursday, but was frustrated with the president's reaction to the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Chappelle-Nadal said she wrote the comment in response to a post that suggested Vice President Mike Pence would try to have Trump removed from office.

U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill issued the following statement in response to Chappelle-Nadal: “I condemn it. It's outrageous. And she should resign.”

Lieutenant Governor Mike Parson also released a statement:

“It is a total disgrace for the Senator to call for the assassination of the President or any elected official. I believe she should immediately resign from her position, as this is conduct not befitting of a State Senator or a Missourian,” said Lieutenant Governor Mike Parson. “I will not sit idly by and let this kind of behavior transpire in our state, especially from members of our government. As a veteran of the armed forces, I was personally offended that a person elected to represent Missourians would call for the assassination of our Commander-in-Chief.”
