KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An investigation into the complaint of mold growth in one of the first batches of medical marijuana purchased legally in Missouri found no evidence of health or safety concerns, the state said Thursday.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services said earlier this week it had received a complaint that a product “contained mold growth” and alerted more than 200 patients who had purchased the product to stop using it.

DHSS retested the batch and found no evidence of mold, the department said in a news release. All results from the retesting of the batch fell within acceptable limits, which was consistent with the initial testing of the batch, according to DHSS.

“We appreciate the cooperation of the facilities in this investigation,” said Lyndall Fraker, director of the DHSS Section for Medical Marijuana Regulation, in a news release. “Their quick action and willingness to do whatever it takes to ensure patient safety is encouraging.”

DHSS said it expects additional “isolated incidents” of mold growth to occur, which it said is common in other states that have regulated medical marijuana sales.

The state has received no other reports of mold to date.

Dispensaries were allowed to begin selling medical marijuana in Missouri on Saturday.
